The idea of “finding time” for particular tasks has always been a bit of an odd saying. After all, there is a finite amount of time in any given day. No matter how hard you search, you’re not going to magically find more of it. What you can do for those tough-to-schedule projects and tasks, however, is make more time by freeing up time that is already in use.
Let’s go over some strategies you can use to make more time for the projects that matter most, whether they are for business or for life.
It’s easy, when you have the impression that you are really busy, to forget just how much time you have available. You might have a long commute to the office, whether it’s in a car or on public transportation. You might spend some time waiting to brew a cup of coffee or toasting a bagel. These little moments add up to wasted time.
These moments are also an opportunity to be just a bit more productive, too. You can use the minutes leading up to a meeting, or while you’re making your breakfast, to great effect if you know how.
Let’s look at how you might use some of these moments to your advantage.
If you have the tools and strategies, you can be ready to use every minute you spend waiting around to be productive. You can start by using some sort of note-taking app. Consider starting a habit of typing up any ideas you have in your idle moments.
Of course, you can also use a small notepad with a classic pen or pencil. In a pinch, you can even use spare paper, napkins, or receipts, although you’ll want a more permanent solution long-term.
Finally, be aware that not all idle thoughts need to be recorded. You might have certain ideas that really take off, but it’s also likely that you’ll have some ideas that are just plain nonsense, too. Still, it’s important to be ready to seize them when they do show up.
